A man who was found dead in a parking lot in the city's southwest on Saturday morning has been identified.

Police were called to the 10300 block of Macleod Trail S.W. at about 8:00 a.m. for reports of a man in medical distress.

The man was found dead in the parking lot and on Monday police identified him as 44-year-old Rodney Conway of Calgary.

“We believe there was a confrontation in a parking lot to the east of where the victim was found. After the confrontation, he made his way through the parking lot to the corner of the building where he collapsed, he was found deceased,” said S/Sgt. Doug Andrus of the CPS Homicide Unit.

Police say they do not believe it was a random incident and that the victim and offender were known to each other.

On Monday morning, police were called out to deal with a number of people who were detained at a Travelodge Hotel in the 2800 block of Sunridge Boulevard N.E. in connection to the case.

“We were looking for several individuals and we received information that they were staying at the hotel. Two left the rooms voluntarily and the third refused to leave and earlier this morning he did leave the room voluntarily,” said Andrus.

A man was taken into custody but was later released along with a number of others.

“We’ve interviewed a number of people in relation to this investigation including the three that were brought in from the hotel. We’re still early in the investigation and we’re working to determine the roles of all these individuals in relation to the investigation,” said S/Sgt. Andrus.

Conway's death in Calgary's eighth homicide of the year and an autopsy is underway to determine the cause of death.
