The Calgary Police Service is asking for assistance from the public in identifying a person of interest in connection with a downtown, daylight assault that left an 83-year-old man injured.

According to police, the incident occurred Friday morning shortly before 8:30 a.m. in an alleyway in the 100 block of 2 Avenue Southeast. Witness reports indicated yells were heard followed by a man fleeing the area on foot.

Officers arrived and discovered a severely injured man in the alley. The assault victim was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Police believe the incident was a random attack.

Witnesses say the suspect was wearing white pants, a black hoodie and a backpack, but were unable to provide specific details on the man’s appearance. Police have released a surveillance camera still of the person of interest.
