Emergency crews have responded to the scene of a pair of crashes on Stoney Trail in northeast Calgary on Friday morning.

The first crash took place in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail at 16 Avenue shortly after 6 a.m.

Police say the two vehicles ran into one another head-on.

EMS say it was very lucky that both passengers were taken to hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition.

Fire crews apparently needed to cut both victims out of the wreckage.

Police have shut down traffic in the area and are detouring drivers.

The second crash took place not far away from the first, at the off-ramp from 16 Avenue to southbound Stoney Trail.

EMS say that the injuries from that crash were only minor.

Traffic on northbound Stoney Trail is backing up towards 17 Avenue because only one lane is getting through.

Police say southbound traffic is not affected.
