Two women are in hospital fighting for their lives after the vehicle they were travelling in slid off Deerfoot Trail and into a light standard.
The single vehicle crash happened Sunday morning at approximately 10:15 a.m. The car was travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail, approximately 200 metres north of the 64 Ave. N.E. overpass, when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car spun off of the shoulder, coming to a stop when it slammed into a light post.
Fire crews extricated the female driver and a female passenger from the wreckage using the jaws of life. The driver, believed to be in her 30’s, was transported to hospital by EMS in serious, life- threatening condition. The passenger was also transported to hospital. Her condition was listed as serious.
Police say road conditions contributed to the crash.
According to police, sections of Deerfoot Trail are extremely slippery and motorists are asked to drive at safe speeds taking into consideration the road conditions.
Between the hours of 12:00 a.m. Saturday morning and 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Calgary police received reports of 409 motor vehicle collisions, 47 of which involved injuries.
Police and EMS officials believe holiday shoppers are contributing to a substantial increase in the number of vehicles on Calgary roads this weekend.
