Calgary police are looking for a woman in connection to a carjacking that happened in the city’s northeast on Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the parking lot of the Shoppers Drug Mart at Marlborough Mall at about 10:10 a.m. after receiving reports of a carjacking.

Police say the driver was a support worker who had a client, a 48-year-old woman with cerebral palsy, in the car with her.

The suspect showed the driver a gun and forced her out of the car and then took off in the vehicle with the client inside.

The client was forced out of the vehicle in the 5000 block of Marbank Drive N.E. about 15 minutes later.

“The driver of the vehicle was a care person, for the front passenger. They were both in the front and the front passenger has a medical condition that requires a care worker be with them,” said CPS S/Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski.

EMS attended to both victims and they are reported to be in good condition.

Police say it was a brazen act considering it happened during the day in a busy area.

“Most likely a crime of opportunity and that’s usually what happens in these situations is people see an opportunity and they take it,” said Gawlinski. “The offender approached the people in their vehicle, which was parked, and started making conversation, asking for directions to a nearby place and at that time use the art of surprise and produced a handgun and then the event unfolded from there.”

Police are looking for a woman between 30 and 40 years old with a heavy build and long brown hair, tied in a ponytail.

She was wearing a grey hoodie, dark jacket and boots at the time of the incident.

They are also searching for a light-blue 2007 Toyota RAV4 with Alberta licence plate ZSK727.

Police have gathered CCTV footage from the area and are reviewing it.
