On Saturday, a section of Market Mall’s parking lot will become a graveyard for the data stored on unwanted electronic devices as part of Fraud Prevention Month.

Between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., March 22, 2014, members of the Calgary Police Service Crime Prevention Unit and the Electronic Recycling Unit’s Hard Drive Shredder will join forces in the Market Mall parking lot, near The Bay, to help Calgarians dispose of their unwanted laptops and computers.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring their unwanted electronics to the event where officials will allow spectators to watch as the hard drives and data storage devices are tossed into the shredder.

While hard drives are being shredded, members of the Electronic Recycling Association, a non-profit organization, will sift through the remaining electronic waste and attempt to salvage usable parts which will be donated or used to refurbish devices.

Deleting or reformatting a device may not remove all data and police recommend destroying devices to ensure personal information does not fall into the wrong hands.
