The Calgary Police says they will be starting up enhanced Checkstop locations to complement existing methods of combatting drinking and driving, just in time for the Calgary Stampede.

Starting July 3, the Checkstops will be in place along with regular Checkstop locations in an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road.

In 2014, 46 people were charged with impaired driving during the Stampede.

So far this year, there have been 11 fatal crashes, killing 12 people in the City of Calgary. Alcohol has been a factor in five of those crashes.

Police are also reminding Calgarians to be aware of the Report Impaired Driving campaign, which helps encourage drivers to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver is on the road.
