There is just one more week to go before voters cast their ballot in the Calgary-Greenway by-election, and a new poll shows a very close race between four of the candidates.

The poll, conducted by Mainstreet Research, shows that the PCs are ahead in the riding, but only by a 5 percent lead over the NDP.

27 percent of decided voters are supporting the PCs, while 22 percent support the NDP.

19 percent say they’ll be voting Wildrose, while 17 percent will vote Liberal.

The results come as the first debate of the by-election was held in the community of Monterey Park over the weekend.

More than 300 people attended the discussion and the economy was the main topic that dominated discussions.

Organizers say the public forum for the candidates is important for the process whether it’s a by-election or a full general election.

“I think it is vital in an election that there is an opportunity for a clash of ideas that forces better outcomes that not only make a difference, but I think there is also a great interest from candidates,” said Brian Lee with the Calgary Leadership Forum. “They want to get a message across; that’s why they run and this is one of the few ways they actually tell the public what they think and articulate their policies.”

The election is set for March 22.
