The price of gas appeared to jump overnight at several stations around the city just in time for the weekend, which promises to be brutally cold.

Several stations posted prices over $1.20 per litre on Friday which is up by 7 and 10 cents depending on where you go to gas up.

Prices in Calgary range between $1.10 and $1.23 but are still cheaper than in some other cities in Canada.

On Wednesday, Vancouver residents saw prices increase by about 10 cents a litre to $1.36.

Experts say the cost for fuel often increases as we get closer to spring and summer and that the trend will likely continue until the May long weekend.

Jason Toews, co-founder of GasBuddy.com says the increase is likely due to oil companies easing drivers into seasonal prices to avoid drastic drops in demand for gas.

“They don’t want to shock consumers by raising prices up by 20 or 30 cents per litre at the same time,” said Toews.
