Residents of Calgary will be able to get a chance to review the plans for the redevelopment of Currie Barracks in the southwest on Monday evening.

The plan is calling for 5,600 homes, about two thousand more than what was originally planned for. 11,000 people will eventually live in the area.

The proposal also includes several hundred square metres of retail and office space.

Currie Barracks, known as CFB Calgary or the Calgary Garrison, was opened in 1933 and was the main training centre for troops stationed in southern Alberta.

It was decommissioned in 1998 as part of the federal government’s plan to consolidate military units into fewer facilities. Its remaining personnel were transferred to CFB Edmonton in Namao, Alberta.

The developer hopes to submit its permit next month.

The open house is at 5 p.m. at 2953 Battleford Avenue S.W.
