Members of the RCMP Innisfail Integrated Traffic Unit are urging motorists to drive with caution, and to highway conditions, after a number of Sunday morning collisions prompted the closure of the northbound lanes of the QEII Highway.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., several people suffered minor injuries in a collision involving 10 vehicles.  EMS crews attended to the patients at the scene and one person was transported to hospital for additional medical treatment.

A short time later, the driver of a semi-tractor trailer lost control of his vehicle and struck a stationary RCMP unit near Antler Hill. The RCMP member was not in the marked vehicle at the time of the collision. The vehicle received extensive damage in the crash.

According to RCMP, stretches of the QEII Highway in central Alberta are covered in patches of ice as Saturday night’s rain froze when the temperature dropped early Sunday.
