A late morning collision involving a semi and a pickup truck has claimed one life and prompted RCMP to temporarily detour northbound and southbound traffic.

The crash occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. at a location just south of the Didsbury overpass. According to RCMP, the driver of a northbound tractor trailer hauling lumber  had reduced the vehicle's speed as he prepared to turn west onto township rd 310 when a northbound Ford pickup truck struck the trailer.

The driver of the pickup truck, a male in his late 20's, was pronounced dead at the scene.

EMS transported the driver of the semi to the Didsbury hospital as a precautionary measure. The semi driver's condition was described as stable, non-life threatening.

An RCMP investigation into the crash is underway. All lanes of the highway have reopened to traffic.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
