Residents of the northwest Calgary community of Sandstone are gathering on Wednesday in the hopes of finding more witnesses to a hit and run that killed a woman last week.
A spokesperson from the family of 56-year-old Wong Shuk Yee spoke out and urged everyone to be safe on the roads.
"I would like to thank all Calgarians for their thoughts, prayers, and support during this difficult time," says Flora Stephenson, Wong's niece.
"We want to let you know that she was a devoted mother, a loving sister, and a special aunt to her nieces and nephews."
The event is being hosted by Councillor Gael MacLeod and members of the Sandstone-Macewan Community Association and is aimed at reminded drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists to be conscious about road safety.
Members of the Calgary Police Service will also be at the rally to educate the public about the importance of sharing the road.
Wong Shuk Yee, who goes by Rachel, was hit by a car on Wednesday of last week while she was crossing Sandtone Dr. N.W. near Berkshire Blvd. in a marked crosswalk.
The driver of the vehicle that initially hit her did not remain at the scene.
Two more vehicles passed Wong as she lay in the road until a third vehicle hit and dragged her for nearly 50 feet.
That driver also fled the scene.
Wong was pronounced dead when emergency crews got there.
An hour later, the first driver, 26-year-old Steven Vanasse, turned himself in to police.
He’s been charged with hit and run causing death and has since been released on bail.
Police are still looking for the driver of the second vehicle involved.
They say it is a dark coloured sedan with damage to the lower part of the front bumper.
Police are convinced that the suspect driver must live in the Sandstone area. "We are fairly certain that the second individual lives in the immediate area due to the time of day and the route it happened on," says Inspector Dean Lagrange.
Stephenson hopes that someone can come forward soon. "It would bring us great comfort and closure if anyone could help us piece together the last few moments of Rachel's life."
Wong immigrated to Calgary three years ago after working as a nurse in Hong Kong for several years.
