The death of a nine-year-old girl near Sundre on Tuesday has prompted RCMP to review its response to the incident as well as its AMBER Alert protocols.

The body of Amber Lucius was found in a vehicle on a rural road near the town by RCMP officers who responded to a 911 hang-up call that was made from the area earlier in the day.

Police are waiting for the full results of an autopsy and say the Medical Examiner’s findings are a key component to their ongoing investigation into the girl’s death.

They say they are in the process of conducting a review of steps taken by police in relation to the incident, which includes a review of AMBER Alert protocols, and say the results will not be released publicly to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Police are in contact with the girl’s family and have charged her biological mother.

Laura Coward, 47, of Millet was arrested on Tuesday and remains in custody.

Coward is charged with, one count of Break Enter and Commit Theft Section 348(1)(b) as well as one count of Abduction in Contravention of Custody Order Section 282(1)(a)

She is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, September 8 in Didsbury via CCTV.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit South continues to investigate and is asking anyone with information to call the Sundre RCMP at 403-638-3675 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
