An independent, senior RCMP officer has been tasked with reviewing the investigation into the alleged assault of a Calgary cab driver back in 2013.

Dash-cam video was released by the city’s taxi regulator last week showing a passenger verbally abusing a taxi driver from the backseat of a Calgary Checker cab.

Sardar Qayum filed a complaint with the RCMP after the alleged assault and the case was reopened after police learned that he was not satisfied with the investigation.

RCMP reviewed the initial file from 2013 and spoke with the victim and on Wednesday announced that a formal Public Complaint has been launched into the matter.

“Based on my meeting with Mr. Qayum, we have initiated the formal Public Complaint Process, which is the best way for him to get the answers he is looking for,” said Supt. Tony Hamori, Assistant Southern Alberta District Commander.

Police say that an independent senior non-commissioned RCMP officer will take a look at the file and provide a report on the findings to senior management.

In addition, they will give Qayum written updates on the progress of the investigation every 30 days and he will receive a final letter explaining the findings at the end of the investigation.

RCMP officials say Qayum has the right to request a review by the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission within 60 days after he receives the final report if he is not satisfied with the disposition of the complaint.

Police say the criminal investigation into the alleged assault will be sent to the Crown to determine if any charges will be laid in the case.
