Police are looking for a B.C. man after an officer was hit by a vehicle while making a traffic stop for impaired driving.

Cochrane RCMP were called to a complaint of an impaired driver heading east on the Trans-Canada Highway towards Calgary at about 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20.

A RCMP officer stopped the Toyota RAV4, near the Highway 1 and Highway 22 intersection and advised the driver that he was under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Police say the driver started the vehicle and then struck the officer as he tried to stop it from speeding away.

The suspect vehicle was last seen driving at a high rate of speed heading south on Highway 22 from Highway 1.

The officer received minor injuries to his arm and was treated and released from hospital.

Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as Richard Dylan Sawchuck, 35, of Courtenay, British Columbia.

Warrants have been issued for Sawchuck’s arrest for the following Charges;

  • Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Escape from Lawful Custody
  • Assault on a Police Officer
  • Assault on a Police Officer with a Weapon

Police say that it appears that Sawchuck was moving to the Calgary or Airdrie area for work.
