A new study shows that preschool daycare costs are mounting for parents in Calgary, which is outpacing the rate of inflation by a wide margin.

The Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives says parents with a child between two and five years old in daycare in Calgary can expect to pay about $1,000 per month and that is the eighth highest rate in the country.

The most costly age group in Calgary is for children between birth and two years old and costs parents approximately $1,250 per month.

Parents of children between 18 months and three years old pay about $1,050 per month for care.

The highest child care costs were in Toronto while the lowest were in Montreal, where government subsidies are used to help with child care costs.

“It’s unaffordable and it’s becoming more unaffordable and I think that the study really shows that you can make child care affordable through public policy. The way you do it is to fund the services the way they have in Quebec for some years and set an affordable fee,” said Martha Friendly with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

However, Calgary is one of only three cities to see preschool fees drop slightly from 2016.
