Calgary-Hays MLA Ric McIver announced several weeks ago that he will seek the leadership of the Alberta PC Party but made the official announcement from an Edmonton senior’s complex on Wednesday.

McIver launched his campaign from the Rosedale Estates Seniors’s living complex and says he has made some mistakes and will work to restore municipal funding that was cut from the Transportation budget.

“I have also made some mistakes, mistakes I will fix if Albertans grant me the privilege of becoming leader of this party and the next Premier of Alberta,” said McIver. “My bosses said cutting it was a mistake. I agree. I will also work to restore funding cut from the Alberta Municipal Water-Wastewater Partnership and the Water for Life program.”

McIver says he will bring a common-sense, new thinking approach to government  that includes three key elements:

  • No senior member of the McIver Leadership campaign team – nor any company they own – will be eligible for government contracts.
  • The Chief of Staff to the Premier will make less than the Premier.
  • Companies and individuals will be prevented from working for the Alberta government at the same time they are registered to lobby the Alberta government.

McIver says he will also eliminate the DriveABLE testing program as an option to assess driver fitness for seniors if he becomes premier and will ask for a review of the SIMARD-MD program.

“Safety is and always will be a top priority. There will still be tests, road tests included, for people of all ages to determine driver fitness and competency, but they will be administered in a way that is fair to all Albertans, including seniors.”

Jim Prentice and Thomas Lukaszuk are also in the race for the Tory’s top job.
