The roads are still closed in the area of a fire at a construction site in Calgary’s Beltline as the fire department is still watching to make sure the blaze doesn’t catch again.

At about 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, fire crews were called to a building under construction at 103 17 Avenue S.E.

Officials say a passerby first alerted them to the fire, and when crews got there, they knew they were going to be in for a fight.

Aerial units were brought in to fight the fire, which took a number of hours to get under control.

Smoke from the large fire could be seen from as far away as Airdrie.

No one was injured, but police did shut down a number of roads in the area to help keep people safe. A neighbouring apartment building was also evacuated as a precaution.

17 Avenue between 1 Street S.W. and Macleod Trail S.E. has been closed, along with 18 Avenue from 1 Street S.W. to 1 Street S.E.

Those closures are expected to stay in place throughout the day and possibly into Monday morning.

"I think it's really important for people to avoid this area because traffic is backed up around and we've got multiple blocks closed off by CPS and we have other agencies on scene as well," said Carol Henke from the Calgary Fire Department.

Crews have also been brought in to demolish the building, which cannot be saved.

There is no word on the cause of the fire so far.

Torode Realty was in the process of developing the mixed-use site and construction on the 48-suite, 929 square metre building was scheduled to be complete by June 2015.
