Fire crews from Rocky View County have doused a grassfire in the Jumping Pound area, west of the city, and officials say it burned between two and three acres.
Crews from Bearspaw, Springbank, and Cochrane were called to the scene at about 2:30 p.m.
The fire was near Shell Canada's Jumping Pound facility and officials from the company say the fire was put out about an hour later.
“The fire was also attended by around 20 plant workers so we had quite a few hands on this but again, we were fighting these really, really high winds and these dry conditions that we’re seeing in December so we had to work pretty fast and we actually had to use a lot of manpower to put this fire out because we couldn’t get trucks up into the hills,” said Dax Huba, District Fire Chief, Rocky View County.
Huba says fire crews have been busy with grassfires because of the unseasonable warm, windy weather.
‘With the high winds, we’re always taking all these fires with the utmost caution just because they can move really, really fast,” he said. “We were pretty fortunate that we could get it pushed off into a heavy wooded area that slows the fire down.”
A spokesperson for Shell says there was no danger to the community, environment or facility and that staff and operations were not impacted.
Fire crews are monitoring the situation and remain in the area.
