One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting after police were called to the city's northwest for reports of shots being fired from a home in the Huntington Hills area on Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to a home in the 1000 block of 78 Avenue N.W. at about 4:40 p.m. and say they saw numerous shots being fired indescrimanately from a home on the street.

The area was contained and police told area residents to stay in their homes.

Police say the situation escalated and a service weapon was discharged, killing the suspect.

A few hours later, Calgary Police Service tweeted that residents no longer needed to take shelter in their basements.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate, which is standard in all officer-involved shootings.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234.
