Over the weekend it was move-in time at Calgary post-secondary campus student residences.

However, for those students not moving in to on-campus housing, finding a place to rent can be tough.

Calgary’s tight rental market means there’s not a lot of affordable housing available for students.

The City of Calgary census puts the city vacancy rate at about 2 per cent.

Student representatives are concerned about the lack of affordable housing.

Levi Nilson with the University of Calgary Students' Union says it would help if there were more secondary suites available.

Nilson says “we know about a quarter of students are renters and then about a fifth of those are in basement suites.”

Nilson and other students will be taking their concerns to city council.  They would like to see more secondary suites legalized in Calgary.
