Conservatives in a new southwest riding are set to choose between two high-profile candidates following a controversial nomination campaign.

During the past few weeks, Rob Anders and Ron Liepert have campaigned for the Calgary-Signal Hill Conservative nomination amid controversy and accusations. Liepert has accused Anders of using robo-calls and questioned the fact Anders is not a resident of Calgary-Signal Hill. Anders says Liepert has sought the support of non-conservatives in an attempt to sway the vote with temporary memberships and has threatened legal action against Liepert over the robo-calling accusations.

Over 3,000 party memberships have been sold in the past couple of months.

This evening, the campaign will come to a close as Conservatives in the riding mark their ballots at the Calgary French and International School. The polls will close at 8:00 p.m.

"I just hope that we get a good turnout and that a lot of our long time conservatives, and not so much the temporary Tories but the long time conservatives, come out and prevent the party hijacking," said Anders following Friday night’s candidate forum.

At the end of the day you can only complain about something so long before you have to do something about it and I'm glad I did," said Liepert. "The reaction has been totally consistent from day one, people saying 'thank goodness and we're prepared to support you'."

"I believe it will show in the results and I think if it doesn't, residents have no one to blame but themselves."

Ron Liepert, the former MLA who served as Alberta’s Cabinet Minister, left public service in 2012.

For the past 17 years. Rob Anders has served as MP for the riding of Calgary-West.
