Only days after the body of a man was recovered from the lake in Fish Creek Park, the province has announced Sikome Lake will reopen to the public on Sunday, August 17 at 10:00 a.m.

““Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Richard Starke, Alberta’s Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “Thank you to members of the public and to the Calgary Police Service and Fire Department for their assistance in responding to this tragic incident.”

Officials will continue to monitor the lake’s water quality to ensure the water in the man-made lake is on par with the standards for naturally occurring beaches. The water will be tested six times each week.

A review of Sikome Lake’s safety and operating procedures is underway.

“There is an inherent risk associated with water-based activities,” said Starke. “Our review will determine whether changes are needed to help visitors stay safe. If changes are needed, we will make them.”

Aquatic safety staff will continue to educate members of the public while keeping a watch over swimmers.
