Fire crews were called out to a blaze on Tuesday afternoon that heavily damaged a southeast home

Fire officials say a neighbour called the fire in at about 2:30 p.m.

“When fire crews arrived flames were visible and the incident commander immediately called a second alarm,” said Carol Henke, CFD Public Information Officer. “We got here quick. We had additional resources, and so now the fire is under control, not completely out but it is under control.”

Six teens were inside the home in the 100 block of Sunvale Crescent S.E. when the fire started and were able to get out safely.

“No word on whether there was a working smoke alarm in the home. Fire crews didn’t hear anything but there were some small explosions from perhaps some chemicals that were kept in the shed,” said Henke.

Officials say there are no reports of injuries but that the teens were assessed by AHS.

“Damage is quite extensive to the entire home,” said Henke. “No one’s going back into that home for quite a while.”

Henke says crews will now check inside the walls to make sure the fire is out and stay on scene overnight to monitor flare ups.

Fire investigators are at the scene and are working to determine a cause.
