A dump of snow overnight caused Calgary commuters to drive with caution on Tuesday morning and motorists who were out on Alberta's highways faced treacherous conditions in some parts of the province.

About five centimetres fell overnight and light snow continued to fall throughout the day on Tuesday.

The snow is expected to taper off and conditions should improve for drivers on Wednesday.

In the city 191 collisions were reported to police between 3:00 p.m. Monday and 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, 17 involving injuries.

Multiple crashes were reported on the QEII and a tow ban was put in place for a while along parts of the highway.

The weather is also to blame for a fatal crash near Smoky Lake. A man in a pickup truck lost control and crossed the centre line, striking another vehicle head-on.

Highways in all directions out of Calgary were completely or partially covered in snow and ice.
