A 31-year-old Calgary man issued an apology to the courtroom, which included his father, on Friday afternoon after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with his mother’s death.

Andrew Murray fatally shot his mother Lois on Thanksgiving Day 2013 in her home in Ranchlands.

Murray originally faced a first-degree murder charge but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

During Friday afternoon’s court proceedings, Murray locked eyes with his father and apologized for his unsuccessful battle with alcohol. Experts testified Murray was in a psychotic state caused by alcohol withdrawal at the time of the shooting.

Murray is expected to be sentenced in June. The Crown has requested a sentence of between 12 and 15 years while the defence asked for a six year sentence.
