A stubborn fire that has been burning for two weeks at a recycling facility is finally out.

The fire at Calgary Metal Recycling at  3415 Ogden Road S.E.was extinguished early Thursday morning.

Clean up efforts will continue over the next few days but the barriers are coming down and the Municipal Emergency Plan has been shut down.

Officials say the emergency activation lasted ten days and crews moved 80,000 cubic metres of material to put out the blaze once and for all.

"We are pleased that the fire is now out and that there were no injuries," said Calgary Emergency Management Director Bruce Burrell. "While no one wants to see an event of this nature prolonged, we are satisfied that we took the proper precautions, working as safely and quickly as we could to ensure the safety of all businesses and residents, and mitigating any damage to the environment."

Part of Ogden Road was closed on and off during the cleanup and is now back to normal.

The city says the costs to fight the fire and to clean up the site could be several hundred thousand dollars.
