Rocky View County Council has voted in favour of a new community near the Springbank Airport, west of Calgary.

The 8-1 decision in favour of the development came following a full day of discussions.

The plan was approved back in 2008, but the recent decision means the developer can go ahead with the subdivision.

The development, dubbed the Harmony Project, will house single family homes, condos, and two golf courses.

It’s expected it will house 10,000 people.

The Springbank Airport Authority opposed the project, saying that the airport is for training and having a community nearby would be risky.

Rolly Ashdown, the Reeve of Rocky View County says that the airport is a smaller one that houses smaller planes. “Everybody that moves into that area is going to be very familiar that there’s an airport there. We’re expecting that nobody’s going to be surprised that there’s an airport running there.”

As for the potential issue of traffic into the city, council says they have staff evaluating the ability of existing roads to accommodate traffic.

In the first phase of the development, any road improvements would be paid for by the developer.
