EMS and Calgary Fire Department crews will be stationed closer to several southeast communities following Wednesday afternoon’s ribbon cutting at the new Seton Emergency Response Station and the Seton Multi-Service Facility.

Mayor Nenshi, CFD Chief Bruce Burrell, Calgary-South East MLA Rick Fraser, and Ward 12 Councillor Shane Keating took part in the ceremony.

"The critical point at which we want to have fire protection in place for new communities is a population of 25,000,” explains Calgary Fire Department Chief Bruce Burrell. “This fire station opened when the population was 24,000.”

“I've been in Calgary almost nine years. This the first time we've been able to do that because we've been playing catch-up.”

The station is slated to serve the communities of:

  • Auburn Bay
  • Cranston
  • Mahogany
  • Seton

“This particular emergency response station is in a brand new part of the city,” said Mayor Nenshi. “It’s surrounded by fields and construction which is uncommon, and partially that’s because the South Health Campus is here and we needed to get the fire station in place to serve the hospital.”

“It’s also an example of us getting ahead of growth. There are too many neighbourhoods where the neighbourhood is built, people are living there and we don’t have the infrastructure to serve them.”

Employees of City of Calgary Parks will work out of the multi-service facility and the Calgary Police Service and Animal & Bylaw Services will eventually have offices in the building.
