With the impending start of the Calgary Flames and Calgary Hitmen hockey seasons, the Flames organization is on the hunt for seasonal workers.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation hosted its annual summer job fair and a steady stream of people filed through the doors looking for work.

One of them, Brikhna Teriq, has been searching for work for the past year.

“It’s very tough. Everyone’s getting laid off – engineers, technicians – everyone’s laid off and the industry’s so bad,” said Teriq. “Everything is so expensive and we still have to pay taxes and bills and no jobs. So it’s terrible.”

Available jobs include concessions, bar staff, servers, kitchen positions, warehouse workers and security guards.

Teriq has her eye on a security position. She got her security license and has managed to land a casual, part-time security position but she says it’s not enough to pay the bills.

“The economy is not stable and it’s really hard to find a job nowadays and wherever you go, it’s the same story,” said Teriq.

Bradley Crowchild has been looking for work for months. He says he’s never had this much difficulty finding a position.

“I’ve looked for jobs in the past and it was much easier when I was a teenager but now it’s much, more worse than I ever imagined growing up,” said Crowchild.

Potential employees are encouraged to bring their resumes and prepare for an in-person interview.

Recent hiring fairs for the Calgary International Airport and Swan Evergreen Village, an assisted living facility in the southwest, have attracted massive crowds of applicants.
