Calgary Police were called out to an altercation over the lunch hour at Bishop Grandin High School that sent one person to hospital.

Police were called to the school at 111 Haddon Road SW. at about 12:20 p.m. for reports of a stabbing.

EMS says the youth met them at the school's main office and was slashed across the lower back.

He was taken to Rockyview Hospital with minor injuires.

Police say they believe the attack on the 15-year-old was targeted and that the victim and assailant knew each other.

Some students at the school were shaken up by the incident.

“There was a whole bunch of commotion. I kind of went around to see what was happening, there was a whole bunch of firemen and policemen. Then when I came outside, I saw Troy, is his name, walking through and he had gauze and blood all over him. People were telling me that he got stabbed by a group of people,” said Mathieu Demman, victim’s friend.

The youth has since been released from hospital and officials are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Officials say that schools are very safe but they will take a look at safety procedures in light of the incident.

“Anytime an incident like this happens it’s an opportunity for us to review our safety protocols and ensure that we have proper steps in place to handle incidents like this. At this point, I believe we do but we always take the opportunity to review those procedures and make sure that we are putting the safety of our students at the forefront,” said Tania Younkers, Calgary Catholic School District.

“Certainly when we are called to schools for reports of injuries it’s more commonly related to sports or perhaps industrial arts or shop or when a student’s been injured by other means so its uncommon to see violence of this nature in a school. But suffice it to say this is a rare atypical instance which we don’t hope to see more of,” said Stuart Brideaux from Calgary EMS.

Police say they are still looking for those responsible for the attack and anyone with information should contact them.
