August has given way to September, and with a lot of heartbreak for children across Calgary, schools have opened for another year of classes.

It’s the first day of classes for more than 330 Calgary elementary, junior high, and high schools.

That means that hundreds of kids will be out on the streets again every morning and those students, along with many drivers will need to take caution going to their classes for the first day this year.

Police are reminding drivers that they will need to slow down and look out for children as they drop off their own kids and pass through school zones.

Another reminder is that all those school zones in Calgary have been changed to playground zones, so speeds are limited to 30 km/h.

Those restrictions are in place from 7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m., 365 days a year, no matter if school is in session or not.

That’s to provide consistency for drivers, increased safety for students, and clear up any misconceptions about schedules in those zones.
