Calgary police have arrested a man in connection to the stabbing of two people at a northeast home on Monday morning.
Police were called to a home in the 200 block of Huntcroft Road N.E. at about 7:45 a.m. and found a man and a woman suffering from stab wounds.
The woman was taken to hospital in serious condition and the man was transported in life threatening condition. Both remain in hospital in serious but stable condition.
Police issued a warrant for 50-year-old Qisong Zhou on Monday evening.
On Tuesday morning, police released two surveillance photos of Zhou at a Royal Bank ATM in the 8200 block of Centre Street NE.
At around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, two members of the public called police when they recognized Zhou walking along Deerfoot Trail from pictures released in the media.
Zhou was arrested without incident at about 4:00 p.m. near Beddington Trail. Police say they are still trying to determine why Zhou was walking along Deerfoot Trail and where he was going.
“Public tips played a crucial role in locating the suspect,” said Detective Tom Bain. “This is a great example of the public and police working together to keep Calgarians safe.”
Zhou is charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with a weapon.
Investigators say that Zhou lived with the family in the home where the attack took place, but they have not released a motive for the attack.
Neighbours say that three generations of family members lived in the home, but mainly kept to themselves because of a language barrier.
"The daughter spoke English and would play with the neighbours' daughter, but I didn't really know the family,” said Sean Esopenko, an area resident.
A court date for Zhou has yet to be determined.
