A Calgary man has been arrested and charged following a string of fires in a southwest community over the last three months.

Beginning November 24, 2014 and continuing until February 12, 2015, Calgary police and Calgary Fire Department members responded to 20 separate fires in the Lakeview neighbourhood. The fires were ignited in apartment buildings and alleyways with the majority of the damage limited to garbage bins.

In the most troubling incident, a lit newspaper was placed in the mail slot of an apartment manager’s door. A security guard inside the suite extinguished the newspaper before the fire spread.

Following an investigation by the arson unit, police arrested 25-year-old Sean Stamboltas in connection to the fires.

Stamboltas has been charged with:

  • Arson-endangering human life (four counts)
  • Arson-property damage (18 counts)
  • Falsely activating a fire alarm (four counts)

In addition to the Lakeview fires, police have determined Stamboltas was responsible for a fire in the northeast community of Rundle.

Stamboltas is scheduled to appear in court on March 12, 2015
