An investigation by members of the Medicine Hat Police Service into reports of a missing person ended with an officer firing their weapon and a deceased suspect.

On Friday evening, officers began a search for a missing person. As a result of the investigation, an officer located a suspect vehicle on Saturday afternoon at a location outside of Medicine Hat on RR 60 near South Boundary Road and was confronted by an armed male.

RCMP attended the location and, working in conjunction with Medicine Hat police, set up a containment perimeter around the suspect vehicle.

The suspect attempted to leave the area and a shot was fired by police. The unidentified suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

ASIRT is investigating the actions of the officers involved and the Calgary RCMP Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation of the crime scene

Roads in the area have been closed and traffic is being diverted around the scene.
