The Calgary Police has charged a 16-year-old boy in connection with a sexual assault on an eight-year-old girl in the northwest community of Silver Springs.

At about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, an eight-year-old girl was outside her home with a ten-year-old friend when they were approached by a boy on a bike.

After he spoke with the girls, he took the younger child into the bushes, saying he was playing a game.

While hidden there, he allegedly sexually assaulted the girl.

The incident was interrupted by a neighbour and the boy jumped on his bike and fled the scene.

Following several tips from the public, investigators with the CPS Child Abuse Unit have arrested a 16-year-old boy.

He has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference with a child under 16, uttering threats, and two counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

The teen cannot be identified due to the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Police are expected to release more details later on Tuesday.
