RCMP say that a 16-year-old boy was struck and killed early Tuesday morning along Highway 2.

Authorities say that just after midnight, there was a crash involving a pickup truck and pedestrian along Highway 2, just north of Highway 566 near Balzac.

Police say a truck, driven by a resident of Airdrie, was northbound on Highway 2 in the middle lane when they struck a pedestrian, dressed in dark clothing.

The pedestrian, identified as a 16-year-old resident of Airdrie, died at the scene.

Investigators believe the pedestrian was suffering mechanical difficulties with his vehicle, which was found nearby.

RCMP shut down Highway 2 at about 1:45 a.m., with traffic detoured onto Highway 566 past the crash.

Calgary Police and the HAWCS helicopter were also called to the scene near CrossIron Mills to aid RCMP.

The highway was closed for about four hours, reopening at 4:05 a.m.

No charges are being considered in connection with the crash and neither alcohol nor speed appeared to have been a factor in the crash.
