The woman who pleaded guilty in connection with the death of her 26-day-old infant in 2010 was sentenced in a Calgary courtroom on Tuesday.

Shelby Herchak’s son Daniel was rushed to hospital in August 2010 from his family’s home but died soon after surgery.

Doctors found that he suffered head injuries, but how the boy received those injuries still remains a mystery.

Herchak, who was just 18 at the time of Daniel’s death, was originally charged with second degree murder but ended up pleading guilty to manslaughter.

During her sentencing hearing on April 30, she tearfully apologized to her parents and the community for the death of her son.

On Tuesday, Herchak was sentenced to 5.5 years in custody but will only serve three years because of time already served.
