Two of the suspects in Thursday morning’s fatal head-on crash on 37 Street Southwest have been formally charged as police continue to hunt for a third suspect.

On Thursday, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a southbound stolen pickup truck in the northbound lanes of 37 St. S.W. near 130 Ave S.W. when it collided with an oncoming car. The driver of the car, a 50-year-old man who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The three occupants of the truck, which had been stolen from a location in Chestermere, attempted to flee the area on foot. Police located and arrested two of the suspects.

On Friday, an underage male, who cannot be named, was charged with one count of possession of stolen property under $5,000 in connection with the events of Thursday morning. The minor is the son of a Calgary Police Service member.

Janelle Umpherville, 26, faces the following charges:

  • Possession of stolen property under $5,000 (four counts)
  • Taking a motor vehicle without consent
  • Breach condition of a recognizance

Umpherville is well known to police throughout southern Alberta. Since May of 2015, Umpherville has been charged on several occasions in connection with shoplifting, the possession of stolen property, the possession of break-in instruments, breaching conditions, and the unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Police continue to search for the third suspect in connection with Thursday morning’s fatal crash and the events that occurred prior to the hit-and-run.
