Members of the Calgary Police Service are investigating an afternoon explosion that sent a teenage boy to hospital.

According to police, emergency crews were called to a location on Midridge Close Southeast early Monday afternoon after a male was injured by a homemade explosive device.

EMS transported a 17-year-old male to the Foothills Medical Centre in serious but non-life threatening condition. EMS officials confirm the teenager suffered very severe injuries to both of his hands that may cost him a portion of his limbs.
