Emily Granson first picked up a racquet at the age of four and has been swinging away under her dad's tutelage ever since.

That's no different than Granson's favourite player, four-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova.

However, she does say that her father is still her idol. "I guess my dad because he's the person who got me into it."

David Granson says he is proud of what his daughter has achieved. "She's working very hard at practice, competing, playing in tournaments. It's something she really enjoys and she's really improved over the last two years."

Emily adds that she enjoys competing and moving up the rankings.

She's currently ranked #3 in Alberta for U12 and 19th in the country for that same age range.

David says that with all her hard work, she has vastly improved. "She's hitting the ball a lot harder and more consistent. She practises in Calgary one or two times a week and she's a member of the Tennis Alberta high performance team, so that's been beneficial.

For her energy and competitive spirit, Emily Granson is the CTV Calgary Athlete of the Week for August 10, 2012.
