They started gathering from the early hours of the morning, and they were not disappointed in downtown Calgary.

Hundreds of thousands of people descended on the downtown core to watch the Stampede Parade, the kick off to ten days of fun at the Calgary Stampede.

About 700 horses and 4,000 people were involved in this year’s parade, led by Calgary native and two-time Olympic gold medallist and bobsledder Kaillie Humphries.

Humphries said it was a longtime dream to lead the parade. “For me, born and raised in Calgary, the city has made me who I am. Being honoured with being Parade Marshal, it’s something that’s near and dear to me. I grew up watching the parade, sitting on the sidelines, just like every other kid out here today. It’s a part of who I am.”

Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi also appeared on horseback, as did Premier Rachel Notley.

“It’s a hoot, I’m having a great time. I haven’t been on a horse for years, this is fun. I was happy to see everybody here – it’s been great! All of Canada should come here and be a part of this,” Notley said.

The Stampede runs until July 12 at Stampede Park.
