An estimated 13,000 competitors took to Stampede Park on Sunday morning to take part in one of the six events of the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon.

This year, the event offered ultramarathon (50 km), marathon (42.2 km), half marathon (21.2 km), 10K, and 5K distances as well as a race for kids.

For the second consecutive year, Jonathan Chesoo of Kenya finished first in the marathon distance. Chesoo completed the 42.2 kilometre course in 2:21:55.

Chesoo was pleased with the conditions he encountered during the race.

“It was very good,” said Chesoo. “It could have been the best time for me."

Chesoo says he arrived in Calgary late Saturday night and was tired for Sunday’s race. His 2016 time was more than four minutes slower than his first place finishing time in the 2015 Calgary Marathon.

Andrea Glover of Nanton clocked the fastest marathon time among female competitors finishing in 3:02:14.
