Police have charged three men in connection with a drug bust on Wednesday that resulted in a Calgary police officer opening fire and killing a dog inside the targeted home.

Two of men was arrested during a bust at the Richmond/Knob Hill home on Wednesday afternoon while the third turned himself over to police later that day.

Police executed a search warrant at the home, located in the 2300 block of 19 Street S.W., after being alerted to a possible drug operation via tips from the public.

During the operation, a pitbull-type dog lunged at one of the officers and bit him on the arm.

The animal would not release the uniformed police officer, prompting another member of the tactical team to open fire and kill the dog.

The injured officer was taken to hospital and needed over 12 stitches to close the wound.

A second warrant was executed at a Coral Springs home without incident.

In the searches, police discovered:

  • Approximately 1.8 kilograms of marijuana (Street value $18,000)
  • Over $1,000 worth of cocaine
  • $14,565 in cash
  • Various amounts of steroids

Three men are facing charges in connection with the operation:

Ashley Stanway, 25, of Calgary, is charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, possessing more than one operator’s licence and resisting arrest.

David Essiambre, 23, of Calgary, is charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Jeffery Randy Yetman, 31, of Calgary, who turned himself into police, is charged with possession of cocaine, and two counts of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

A woman was also arrested at the Richmond/Knob Hill home, but she has since been released without charge.
