Fire crews are still at the scene of a house fire in the southeast Calgary community of Erin Woods, monitoring hot spots after the blaze on Wednesday evening.

At about 9 p.m., firefighters were called to the scene in the 100 block of Erin Grove S.E.

When they got there, they found a fully-involved home and three occupants all outside.

Officials say crews went into a defensive attack strategy to knock down the fire and protect other homes from the flames.

The fire department also needed to allow a gas line, which was flaring up, burn while they worked.

“We’re allowing the gas to continue to burn while it’s flared,” said CFD Battalion Chief Stu Laird. “That way, it allows up an element of control. If we were to extinguish the flames right now, we would have a gas leak that would be out of control.”

The cause of the fire still isn’t known and there is no estimate of damage at this time.
