The Trans-Canada Highway was shut down near Field, B.C. on Monday because of a rock slide and officials say they hope to open a single lane to traffic by Thursday evening.

Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on October 24, crews were working on drilling holes for explosives 16 km west of Field when the rock slide occurred.

Two workers were caught in the slide and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Work has started to stabilize the rock face and geotechnical surveys are ongoing to ensure the safety of the crews while they clear the debris.

Once that has been completed, work can begin on removing the estimated 10,000 cubic metres of rock from the roadway.

Traffic is being detoured through Highway 95 and Highway 93 South through Kootenay National Park.

Officials say the gravel shoulder will be graded and paved on Thursday and they hope to have a single lane, alternating traffic, open by early Thursday evening.

Updates on the Field closure are available through DriveBC’s website.
