The man accused in Calgary’s worst mass murder stand trial for his role in the deaths of five young people next year.

Matthew de Grood will go to trial May 16, 2016, with proceedings continuing until May 27.

The defence has requested a jury trial, presided over by a judge who is not from Calgary.

Matthew de Grood is charged with five counts of first degree murder in the stabbing deaths of Zackariah Rathwell, Kaiti Perras, Jordan Segura, Lawrence Hong, and Joshua Hunter.

The group was together at a house party in Brentwood, celebrating the end of classes when the stabbings took place.

Police say de Grood, who was an invited guest to the home, showed up with a knife and stabbed the five victims.

He was found a short distance away and subsequently arrested.

De Grood has since undergone three psychiatric assessments and found fit to stand trial.

At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing in March, Justice J.D. Holmes made the decision that there was enough Crown evidence to send Matthew de Grood to trial for the stabbings.
