The Alberta Legislature will stand in tribute to the 35-year-old on Wednesday before resuming the session. Tuesday’s session was cancelled and flowers marked Bhullar’s seat as politicians held a moment of silence.

Bhullar’s colleagues remembered him as a gentleman with a great sense of humour, but also a fierce debater in the house, passionate about the people he represented.

Flags will remain at half-mast on provincial buildings until sunset on the day of Bhullar’s funeral. A date has not yet been announced.

Calgary MLA Manmeet Bhullar was killed in a crash on Monday night on the QE2 while helping a stranded motorist.

Red Deer RCMP were called to the crash on the QEII Highway at about 2:20 p.m. near the Blindman River just north of the City of Red Deer.

Police say a northbound vehicle lost control and rolled into the median on the south side of the hill and two northbound vehicles stopped on the shoulder to assist.

A semi-tractor trailer unit was travelling towards the vehicles, lost control on the hill and struck the rear of one of the vehicles and then ran into the driver of the other, who was outside his vehicle at the time.

Calgary-Greenway MLA Manmeet Bhullar, 35, was hit by the truck in the median and later died from his injuries.

Interim PC Leader Ric McIver said in a statement that Bhullar was passionate about youth, and “Inspired many young people to get involved in politics and volunteer their time.”

“His passion and dedication will live on in our hearts and we will greatly miss him. To Manmeet’s family: many of our colleagues are dear friends of Manmeet and his family, and it breaks our hearts to know we have lost such a great soul. Manmeet accomplished more in his brief time than most people accomplish in their lifetimes.”

Bhullar, a former Cabinet minister, was on his way back to Edmonton after speaking at the University of Calgary earlier in the day.

His family released a statement saying:

The light of our lives went dark today. Manmeet Singh left us while he was doing what he loved more than anything – helping someone else. We know he would want us to be thankful for the countless blessings he was given by God. Just as his faith, wife, family, friends and community gave him strength, it will give us strength now. We thank you for your support during this difficult time and ask for privacy. He demanded excellence of himself and those around him. We are all better because of him.

Outside the Bhullar home in Calgary, hundreds of people gathered to remember him on Monday night.

Bhullar played a vital role in Prentice's administration and the former premier was among those gathered to mourn his loss.

Bhullar was born in Calgary and grew up in the northeast community of Whitehorn.

He was first elected at 28 and under the PC government, served as Minister of Infrastructure, Human Services, and Service Alberta.

During this time in office, Bhullar worked to build better systems for children, fought to change unfair cell phone rules, and passed laws to protect consumers.

Waseem Malik, a friend of his, said he was always available to help. "He's been there. Anybody who needs personal help or business help. He's a guy who will return your phone calls."

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi made the following statement on social media after hearing of Bhullar's passing:

Premier Rachel Notley also made a statement on Monday:

"All Albertans should be proud of his significant contributions to public life. There will be opportunities to remember his life and work over the coming days and we will do so along with all Albertans. We have lost our colleague, Calgary-Greenway has lost a friend and effective voice in the legislature, and most of all, we have all lost a passionate advocate for Alberta.”

On Tuesday morning, the Ontario legislature recognized the loss by holding a moment of silence.

The flags at all of the provincial government buildings across Alberta will be flying at half-mast until sunset on the day of Bhullar's funeral to mark his passing.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

The Government of Alberta is also inviting residents to share their condolences for the Bhullar family on their website.

Messages are also being shared on Twitter with the hashtag #NiceToManmeetYou.
