Gardening staff at the Cochrane Parks Department have a new environmentally friendly way to get around town.

The town is trying out two custom-built tricycles with wooden boxes mounted on the front to carry its gardening supplies.

The trikes can carry up to 45 kilograms of tools and make it easier for workers to get into smaller spaces.

“Not only does this cut costs and cut CO2 emissions, but it help's to promote bicycling as a primary form of transportation in Cochrane, which we’re also really excited about,” said Mayor Truper McBride.

Crews are using the three-wheeled carts instead of a truck to take supplies to flower beds and green spaces around the town.

If the pilot program is successful, the town will look at ordering more of the trikes for other departments.

The trikes are custom made by Haley Tricycles in Philadelphia and cost about $2500 each.
